Laser Hair Removal: The Process
Overview
Imagine having smooth, hair free skin without shaving, waxing, plucking, or bleaching your unwanted hair. Using the latest Candela laser technology known as the GentleMAX and GentleLASE lasing process, we offer safe, fast, effective treatments for both men and women.

Unlike other treatments, the GentleMAX and GentleLASE process is easy -- requiring no creams or gels, no pre-treatment waxing, and no needles. In fact, laser hair removal is a cosmetic breakthrough. Treatments are comfortable, treating hair follicles in a fraction of the time of other methods, using only the gentle power of laser light.

Traditional hair removal techniques, such as shaving, plucking, waxing and depilatory creams provide only temporary relief. Until now, the only recognized way to remove hair permanently has been by electrolysis - which can be tedious, time-consuming and uncomfortable. The GentleMAX and GentleLASE System safely removes unwanted body hair without damaging the delicate pores and structures of the skin. Facial and bikini areas are usually completed in less than ten minutes; legs, backs and larger areas can take longer.

Metro Laser is consistently rated the top laser center in metropolitan Philadelphia. (See reviews under Metro Laser, LLC on www.CitySearch.com.)

How it works
Lasers remove hair by destroying the blood supply to the hair follicle. When the procedure is performed correctly, all of the hair follicles with a blood supply will be destroyed during the treatment. The reason hair removal requires multiple treatments is because the hair grows in cycles. You have much more hair lying dormant under the skin than is actually growing at any given time. The hairs typically change cycles about every 6 weeks. Therefore treatments must be performed about 6 weeks apart. This can vary slightly depending on the area of the body. Women usually require 5 to 6 treatments while men often require more. If someone tells you they can remove the hair in less than 5 or 6 treatments they are simply not being honest with you. It is very important to adhere closely to your laser schedule. Failure to not follow your schedule will result in more treatments than normal.

Before your treatment
Before you arrive for each hair removal treatment, there are a few simple instructions that must be followed to make your treatment as effective and safe as possible.

1. You must avoid the sun for 4 – 6 weeks. Recent sun exposure or artificial tanning bed exposure can excite the melanin in the skin and adversely affect treatment effectiveness. You should also avoid spray-on tans for 7 days prior to treatment.

2. The treatment area should be absolutely clean of any deodorants, lotions, makeup, sun block, or any other chemicals or skincare products. These can block the transmission of light and limit the amount of heat that enters the skin.

3. Make a note of any medications that you are currently taking. Your laser hair removal professional needs this information to make sure that any medications you are taking do not cause photosensitivity. Let your technician know each time you have a treatment if you have taken any new medications or received any sun exposure.

The Procedure
Before we begin the procedure we will ask a few simple medical questions. Before each treatment we will ask about your recent tanning habits and any new medications. If you suspect you are pregnant it is important to let your technician know. Next we will remove any re-growth with a razor. This will provide a clean surface and will prevent any hair on the outside of the skin from absorbing the laser light. Typically we will outline the area with a marker to make sure that we are treating the entire area. This is to ensure that no areas are missed by the laser. Now the technician will uniformly pulse the laser over the entire area to be treated. The pulse will feel like a rubber band snapping on the skin. The sensation is only felt during the pulse of the laser beam and usually doesn't linger on after the treatment. After the treatment we will cool the skin with a wash cloth, remove any lines from the marker, and apply a soothing lotion if needed.

A topical anesthetic cream can be prescribed for sensitive areas if necessary to lessen any discomfort.

Post-Treatment Care
The treated skin will feel like a sun burn for a few hours after the treatment. The skin will appear pink and may be slightly tender for a few hours to a few days. On rare occasion there may be burning, blistering, scabbing, or bruising. If this happens contact Metro Laser immediately for special instructions.

The hair will appear to grow after the treatment. It is actually not growing, it is shedding. In about 10 to 14 days the hair will loosen up and fall out of the follicle.

It is important to closely follow your protocol and schedule your next appointment. Missed appointments can results in more treatments than normal.

FAQs

Is it safe?
Yes. If performed by a well trained, qualified technician lasers are safe. The Candela GentleLASE family of lasers have been cleared by the FDA for the treatment of unwanted hair. And for added safety, Metro Laser is also one of the only laser centers in the Philadelphia area that offers laser hair removal performed by licensed physicians.

Is electrolysis considered more permanent than laser? Also, what are the advantages of laser over electrolysis?
Electrolysis has FDA approval to advertise hair removal. Lasers can not ethically make this claim. We can only offer an 80% reduction. The reason being, lasers do not remove gray, red, and light blond hairs. In other words the hair has to be pigmented in order to absorb the laser energy. Lasers destroy the blood supply to the hair using heat from a laser beam and electrolysis destroys the blood supply using a pulse of electricity. The problem with electrolysis is that it takes much longer to perform treatments. It would take roughly 30 minutes to cover the size of 3 or 4 square inches whereas the laser can do that in 15 seconds or less. With electrolysis the area still has to be treated just as many times as with the laser. The number of treatments has to do with the cycles of hair. It would take years to complete a man's full back with electrolysis. If your hair has pigment meaning that it is dark, lasers are the better choice.

How will my skin look and feel after the treatment?
The skin will have a reddish appearance and will have swelling that looks very similar to goose bumps for a few hours after the treatment. The swelling typically subsides within a few hours. The skin will feel like a sunburn for a few hours to a few days after the treatment. It is very important to stay out of the sun for a minimum of 7 days after your treatment and to use a full spectrum UVB/UVA sunblock with an SPF of 30 or higher.

Are there any health risks or side effects from the laser treatment?
There is always a risk of being burned or blistered by any laser device. You must make sure that your treatment is being performed by a technician that is trained and certified. There has only recently been a national board certification for laser hair removal. It is offered by the Society of Clinical and Medical Hair Removal Professionals. Metro Laser is not only certified but is owned and operated by licensed physcians.

Can lasers for hair removal cause cancer?
The radiation produced by the laser is non-ioninzing radiation which means it doesn't cause cancer. It is the same heat that is produced from a light bulb. If you have had skin cancer in the past or suspect that you may have skin cancer you will be required to provide written permission for laser hair removal from your dermatologist prior to treatment.

How long do the entire series of treatments take?
Treatments are usually performed 6 - 8 weeks apart. On average women can expect 8 months to a year of treatments. In some cases it may take up to 14 months of treatment for men to destroy all of their hair. Men usually require more treatments than women.

Are there any situations where laser simply doesn't work for certain people for whatever reason?
Lasers will not work on grey, red, and light blond hairs. You also can't use the GentleLASE alexandrite laser (755nm) on tanned skin or skin of color. It will burn the tan or pigmentation in the skin just like it burns the hair. Alexandrite Lasers are the most commonly used lasers for hair removal because the wavelength is best suited to remove hair.

How many treatments does it typically take to complete?
Most laser centers will tell you 5 - 6 treatments are the average number of treatments it takes to remove the hair. Current research shows that women require 5 – 6 treatments and men usually require more. Don't let a laser center try and fool you and tell you that their laser can do it in less. It has to do with how many cycles of hair your body has and not as much to do with the brand of laser. This is assuming that we are speaking of a laser with adequate energy output. The Candela GentleLASE lasers have the highest energy output and the largest spot size (coverage area) of any laser on the market.

How many areas can be treated per visit?
Our lasers are fast. We can perform a full back treatment including shoulders and neck in 45 minutes to 1 hour. Bikini and underarms for women can be performed in 30 minutes or less. The amount of coverage depends on the patients tolerance to discomfort. Some can have full body treatments in one session.

Does it hurt?
Most patients describe the sensation of the laser pulse as only uncomfortable, but not unbearable. It is often described to the feeling of having a rubber band snapped against the skin. The discomfort doesn't usually linger more than a few seconds after the pulse. For sensitive areas we have a topical anesthetic numbing cream available.

Can skin of color and tanned skin be treated?
Recent advances in laser hair removal have made it possible to treat these skin types. Metro Laser has the technology to help people of all skin types with laser hair removal.

Do I have to let the hair grow out before treatment?
No, but we prefer 2 to 3 days growth so that we may see the coverage area of the hair. Remember not to tweeze, wax, or bleach the hair for 3 weeks prior to treatment.

Which colors of hair are best treated by lasers?
Darker hair responds best to laser hair removal because lasers target the pigment in the hair follicle. Light brown or auburn hair may require more treatment sessions. White, gray, or silver hair does not respond to laser or light based treatments.

Do many women have unwanted facial hair?
Growth of hair on the face which is coarser, longer or more profuse than is "normal" for the age and race of the woman is not uncommon. Unwanted facial hair is a chronic problem for about 22 million American women who remove facial hair at least once a week.

Will my hair be gone after my treatment?
You will leave the treatment with smooth skin. There is however 3 to 5 mm of hair still in the skin. The hair has to shed. When the hair begins to shed it appears to be growing again. People often call a few days after their treatment and ask about this "re-growth". This is not re-growth but is actually the dead hair falling out of the skin. It usually falls out or sheds within 2 to 3 weeks.

Is this treatment covered by insurance?
Most insurance companies do not cover cosmetic procedures. However, we do offer financing.

How much does the laser treatment cost?
Pricing is determined by several factors including such things as body area, size of area, amount of hair, texture of hair, and others. Treatments are less expensive when purchased as a package rather then individually. You can also check our current specials for added discounts.

Laser and Light-Based Esthetics
Overview
Photo Facial, also known as Photo Rejuvenation, is a non-invasive cosmetic procedure that utilizes photons from various wavelengths of light to rejuvenate the skin. This procedure typically performed on the face, can actually be performed anywhere on the body including shoulders, chest, and hands.

The Photo Rejuvenation procedure is designed to produce younger and healthier looking skin. As we age, we begin to see visible signs of sun damage, time, and lifestyle choices appearing in our complexion. Often times as we age our skin begins to show signs of freckles, wrinkles, broken capillaries, dark spots, blotchy skin color, redness of the face and neck, enlarged pore size and uneven pigmentation. Photo Rejuvenation can be used to reduce the appearance of vascular redness and Rosacea, alleviate pigmented brown spots and sun damage, and improve skin texture and collagen structure all at once. With the use of FDA approved Candela GentleLASE technology, dramatic improvements can now be accomplished with little or no "downtime" and with very minimal discomfort.

At Metro Laser, we are able to target the hyperpigmentation in the skin, and usually alleviate sundamage in 1 to 2 treatments. The patient must avoid the sun for a minimum of 6 weeks prior to Photo Rejuvenation treatments with the GentleLASE device. Tanned skin and skin of color cannot be treated.

Skin Tightening with the GentleMAX YAG laser is the latest FDA-approved application for our cutting edge technology. By gently but steadily heating the treatment area, the laser causes the skin to become tighter and lines become increasingly more shallow and less noticeable.

Spider Veins and Varicose Veins treated with the GentleMAX disappear after just one or two treatments. There is very little to no discomfort or pain associated with this treatment.

In addition to the above-mentioned services, we treat sun damage, melasma, blotchy skin, pigmented lesions and age spots.

Our board certified staff can customize a package of treatments based on your skin type and skin condition. We will perform a comprehensive analysis of your skin allowing us to recognize problem areas and determine the appropriate treatment, giving you the best results possible.

FAQs
What is Photo Rejuvenation?
Photo Rejuvenation is a series of laser treatments that improve the appearance of sun damaged skin, age spots, and fine lines and wrinkles. Treatment also improves skin texture, mild acne scars, reduces large pores, and broken capillaries. Treatments are especially effective for improving the appearance of the face, neck, chest, and hands. This exciting treatment involves little or no "down time." You can resume normal activities immediately.

How many treatments will I need?
For optimal results, a series of 3 to 6 treatments are recommended. Follow-up treatments may be desired once or twice a year to maintain results.

How does the treatment work?
Laser light is applied in a series of gentle pulses over the treatment area. Without damaging the skin, the light penetrates through the skin and is absorbed by the abnormally dilated vessels or pigmentation. The heat causes damage to the vessel or lesion, and the body begins its natural healing process. The lesion will darken and crust before it flakes off or the body absorbs it. Treatment can be given as frequently as every three weeks.

What are the benefits of Photo Rejuvenation?
Treatment improves sun spots, age spots, dull complexions, uneven pigmentation, large pores, sun damaged skin, early signs of aging, and broken capillaries. You can enjoy smoother skin with a more even tone. Photo Rejuvenation offers minimal discomfort during treatment and you will be able to resume regular activities immediately.

What is treatment like?
Treatment may vary from 15 to 45 minutes depending on the size of the area to be treated. First, the treated area is cleansed and depending on the treatment a topical anesthetic cream may be applied. When the pulse of laser light is delivered, the sensation is similar to a snap of a rubber band. After treatment the skin cleansed, cooled with a cool compress, and a sunscreen is applied.

Are there any possible side effects?
Side effects are rare but can include burning, blistering, scabbing, and changes in pigmentation. Immediately following treatment, the skin may appear flushed, brown pigmented spots may appear darker, and capillaries may be more visible. In rare instances, temporary swelling may occur.

What improvement will I see?
Patients have a high degree of satisfaction with their results. Expect to see a gradual decrease in redness, broken capillaries, flushing, irregular pigmentation, pore size and fine lines. After each treatment, the skin will feel smoother and appear to have a more even tone.

Is this treatment covered by insurance?
Most insurance companies do not cover cosmetic procedures. However, we do offer a payment plan.
